Editorial Policy

Readiness advice can keep people safe, so we hold it to a simple standard: every safety fact must match an official source, and we show you that source.

The Ready Homestead is run by founder and editor Alvin Dean, who sets these standards.

Where our facts come from

Safety facts about water, food, carbon monoxide, generators and first aid must match one of these:

• FEMA Ready.gov
• The CDC
• FoodSafety.gov and the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service
• The EPA
• The American Red Cross

Each guide names its source in the text and lists the pages we checked in a "Sources we checked" box at the end. Rough numbers, like costs or appliance watts, are labeled as estimates.

How a guide is made

1. Pick a real question. We write about things people really ask when they get ready at home.
2. Draft. We use AI writing tools to help draft. A draft is never published as-is.
3. Check every fact. Each safety fact is checked against the official source pages listed on the guide.
4. Score it. Every guide must pass our checklist: plain words at an 8th-grade level or below, named sources, clear headings, links to related guides and one clear next step.
5. Review. We re-check guides when official advice changes and show a "Reviewed" date when we do.

What we will not do

• Give medical, legal or electrical advice. We tell you when to ask a doctor, check local rules or hire a licensed electrician.
• Use fear to sell. No "the grid is collapsing."
• Promote products with claims that cannot be backed up, such as "free energy" generators.

Money and independence

Some pages may include affiliate links. They never change what our guides say. Pages with an affiliate link carry a notice near the top. Read our full affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

If you spot an error, tell us and we will check it against the official source. When we fix a safety fact, we update the guide and its "Reviewed" date.
